About the project
This 2.0 million US gallon per day seawater reverse osmosis plant is located on the island of Grand Cayman in the district of West Bay and was commissioned in 2023. This plant is the most energy efficient plant designed, built and operated by the Company. It utilizes ultra efficient centrifugal high-pressure pumps with ERI isobaric work exchangers and uses less than 10 kWhrs of electrical power to produce 1,000 US gallons of product water, inclusive of power for feedwater pumps, post-treatment and product water delivery to the Company’s reservoirs. This plant produces finished water with a TDS of less than 200 ppm by passing some of the desalted seawater through a ‘second pass’ brackish water reverse osmosis system.
The plant is in a Category 4 hurricane resistant concrete building. A standby diesel generator is installed to support up to 50% of the plant’s operational capacity in the event of a power outage, such as during a major storm. In addition to the desalination plant equipment, the facility includes three one million US gallon reservoirs for finished water storage, disinfection equipment, finished water distribution pumps and laboratory testing facilities.
This facility is one of three seawater reverse osmosis desalination plants that provide drinking water to the Company’s regulated water utility in Grand Cayman. The drinking water produced by these facilities is distributed via the Company’s pipelines to homes, business, hotels and tourist accommodations in western Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.
