From seawater to drinking water
Learn how seawater is treated and purified through desalination to produce safe, potable drinking water.
Step 1
Deep well seawater extraction
Raw feed water is drawn from wells drilled into the limestone bedrock below Grand Cayman. The source water is pristine and free from contaminants often found in open seawater.
Step 2
Reverse osmosis desalination
Salt in the seawater is separated from the fresh water using a process called reverse osmosis. This process pressurizes the seawater and semi-permeable membrane elements allow freshwater to pass through to one side of the elements leaving brine water and contaminants on the other.
Step 3
Post-treatment for potable standards
The fresh water then undergoes post-treatment, where it is carefully finished to produce high-quality potable water that is safe, healthy, and refreshing to drink.
